Alamein Councillor
Len Gates has lived and worked in the Andover area since 1988. He was elected borough councillor for Andover Alamein ward in May 2003 and re-elected in May 2007.
During his first term in office he campaigned on a number of local issues including
- he opposed the increase in housing numbers allocated to the East Anton MDA arguing that the original 1700 was more than emough and the remainder shoudl be allocated to other parts of the borough.
- he spoke out against the premature closure of Shepherd Spring Schools and supported the action groups campaigning to keep them open.
- he supported the establishment of Enham Alamein parish council and the production of parish plans for both Enham Alamein and Smannell.
- he has campaigned regularly for a town council for urban Andover and opposed the sell off of Andover Guildhall to a pizza restaurant.
In June 2007 he was elected leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Test Valley Borough Council. The current makeup of the council is 33 Conservatives and 15 Liberal Democrats.
He is a member of Test Valley’s Northern Area Planning and Planning Control Committees. As member of the Planning Control Committee he sits on the council’s local plans panel which determines planning strategy for the borough.
Len is also member of the borough’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee where he is lead member for Finance, chairing the council’s audit and finance panels. He has also been a member of the council’s Licensing Committee.
Len is a governor of Anton Junior School and a trustee of the Andover Charities.
